| Use Color-coded Grease Caps |
|
To ensure that the correct lubricant is being used, try using colored plastic grease caps. These fit right on the grease fitting and also help keep dirt and/or water off the grease fitting and hence out of the bearing. The color-coding can be used for the type of grease or the frequency. They cost only a few cents each.

In a gearbox, sometimes a simple oil drain will leave more than 15 percent of the old oil behind, which can occlude to machine surfaces and become trapped within the casing. This also leaves behind a host of reactive chemicals that rapidly deplete antioxidant additives, causing the base oil to be unprotected. Find out what else can accelerate the rate of oil oxidation and what can be done to prevent it.

Question: What are the three major sources of particle ingression?
| GET THE ANSWER
If the wrong grease is used in high-speed bearings, problems can be experienced with roller “skidding” where the bearing roller fails to rotate through the full 360 degrees due to reduced friction. As a result, the roller can develop flat spots, and its service life is reduced. Discover the best greases for automotive wheel bearings and which greases are recommended for roller bearings subjected to heavy loads and shock loading.
